Architectural Masterpiece & Alpine Hydrotherapy
7132 Therme Vals & The Quartzite Springs
Carved deep into the steep Graubünden mountainside from 60,000 slabs of indigenous green-grey quartzite, Therme Vals is Pritzker Prize laureate Peter Zumthor’s world-renowned sensory ode to stone, water, and shadow.
The Philosophy of Monolithic Hydrotherapy
Therme Vals rejects loud water park theatrics in favor of meditative acoustic reverberation and sensory contemplation. Water flows over stratified layers of stone quarried just two kilometers up the valley, highlighting the raw mineral essence of the Swiss Alps.
"Mountain, stone, water — building in the stone, building with the stone, into the mountain — our building should grow out of the rock." — Peter Zumthor
The Circuit of Sensory Pools
- Central Thermal Basin (32°C): The heart of the monolithic complex, lit by subtle subterranean ceiling slits.
- Fire Bath (Feuerbad, 42°C): A glowing red room radiating intense heat that expands peripheral circulation and relaxes tense musculature.
- Ice Bath (Eisbad, 14°C): A cobalt-blue pool delivering instantaneous vasoconstrictive contrast for nervous system reset.
- Blossom Pool (Blütenbad, 33°C): Infused with thousands of floating aromatic marigold and lavender petals.
- Sound Bath (Klanggrotte, 35°C): An acoustic resonance chamber accessed only through a narrow stone water corridor.
- Outdoor Alpine Pool (36°C): Steaming waters overlooking towering pine peaks and winter snowfields.
Visiting Protocols & Night Bathing
